Conflict

In every country, in every part of the world, some form of crisis occurs. I’m sure of this because people and conflict coexist and where there are people there is bound to be differences. Conflict can be between two countries that end erupt disputes or start wars. Also countries also can have domestic differences that lead to riots and movements or civil wars. One more factor that can be important to know about conflict is how the length of time ones issues to settle, and some conflict never seems to end. As I said before there are many counties in this world to study conflict, but I decided to choose a unique country were the dispute is between two bordering countries, many wars have started and started up again, and defiantly is one of those conflicts that seem to never have a horizon of an end. The regions I’m describing would be Israel and Palestine conflict. In the following of my blog I hope to share my findings about this ongoing conflict in the Middle East and help you better understand where and how being in the geographic location of crisis starts, the cultural groups involved in the crisis, the timeline of pre-crisis and crisis to show you how this conflict has evolved over the many years, the issues of crisis and how the contribute to the constant conflict, some of the factors that contribute to the perpetuation of the crisis, and finally the communication strategies that have provided potential to ease to a possible end. There are a lot of topics to cover, but conflict is never easy. Many factors are attributed to better understanding the differences that create conflict. Lets start with the location of these countries where it all starts.
Most would think that the geography region of a place would be the easiest to describe, but after all the conflict this region has gone through, it’s been torn up and put back together many of times in this Middle Eastern area. Present day the state of Palestine is located east of the Mediterranean Sea and the banks of the river Jordan plus some of the regions surrounding south and east of that (Wikipedia, 2.3-Geography). This might have started out being the region, but then again, where would we put Israel. After the many conflicts we will discover through out the paper we come to find how Israel eventually got it’s place in the Palestinian area and is now to this day a region at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, and boardered by the countries Lebanon by the North, Syria by the northeast, Jordan by the east (which durring the conflict of Palestine and Israel, Jordan is actully Arab-Palastine), and finally holding it together by Egypt south of Israel (Wikipedia, 2.3-Geography). Two more areas we sould identify that are important to were much of the conflict actuly happened, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The West Bank is a land locked territory between Israel and Jordan and west of the River Jordan. Durring the conflict West Bank started under Palastinian athority, but through out the wars and continued conflict the West Bank became under Israel comand to this day. This land mass has been a disputed region by both contries for power and controlover it. The other region, the Gaza, has a bit different history. This narrow coastal strip northwest of Israel along the meditreanean waters is a soverin country. Even though it hold one of the most heavily dence cities on Earth, it is only under Palastinian jurastiction. Although the palastians only hold a military occupation, Israel hold the occupying power (Wikipedia, 2.3 Geography). We covered the two main loactions, Palastine and Israel, geographically for you to better understand were this conflict is happing in the world and the areas that affect including the neighboring countries and also, the two regions that arose conflict, the West bank and the Gaza. Edgar Morin in his paper Israel/Palastine: The Cancer, discribes his thoughts on how the geographical location affects the conflict. “The Middle East is the Seismic Area of the Planet where East and West, North and South, Rich and Poor, Secular and Religious Collide. The Arab-Israeli cancer is based on a territorial pathology: the foundation of two nations in a single land…”(Morin). From Israel trying to for a country in a region already in dominance is where much of the conflict arises, making the geography at this point a very important factor is this conflict, conflict started by to different culture groups which is what will consider now.
By having two different regions in a quarrel, it can be the cause lead by two very different culture groups, the Israelis and the Palestinian-Arabs. There are many culture groups the have been made and affect over the course in time be the fall out of the crisis, but these two main groups is what will focus in on. Over many years culture has been one of the most powerful factors contributing to conflict. In the Israel Palestine conflict two dominate culture groups went head to head on their religion ethnicity. Israel was predominantly Orthodox Jews. Were as the Palestinian were mostly practicing Zionists. Both are forms of different ethnicity, which makes it very hard to understand the reasons for practicing something that is so different from you own, ethnocentric feelings toward your practice is easy because people fear culture that the differences are so far dissimilar from your own. An article from the Israeli-Palestinian ProCon.org site states a clear description of how the relationship between the Orthodox Jews and the Zionists collide.

"In the nineteenth century, Zionism often competed with Orthodox Judaism for the hearts and minds of young Jews, and enmity existed between Orthodox Jews of Eastern Europe and the Zionists (and those residing in Palestine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries). Orthodox Jews resented the dominantly secular nature of Jewish nationalism (for example, the desire to turn the holy tongue of Hebrew into an instrument of everyday discourse), whereas the Zionists derogated the other-worldly passivity of Orthodox Jews.
-Country Studies
This creates a problem for the two disparity groups that coexist virtually in the same region. The two clashing cultures result in conflict and hostility treating their culture identity on both sides. Some of the reasons for the conflict are simply that some have the opinion that “it is the Jews land,” because of historical religious belief, one of these opinions states, “Unlike the Jews, those Arabs who immigrated there had no ancient attachments to or historical memories of this homeland ... this ancient Land of the Jews!” (Masada2000.org). Which can make theses two culture disputing over land even more then just land, but religious holy ground. These disputes have been going on for long periods of time that it’s easy to use a time line to see how conflict has evolved between the two culture groups.
A time-line is a great way to see how conflict and issues develop and have an impact as time goes on. Israel and Palestine history has developed quite profusely of the last century or so. There have been many incidents that have transacted through out the history of Israel and Palestine, so many that it would be hard to describe all important events in just one paragraph. Ranging from control of Palestine area, the many wars and violence that has happened to set boundaries or take control over land to now the peace treaties that have been in resent years in order to help bring a reach of harmony to both countries. In the 19th century many of these events have taken place, starting with the 1922 British mandate of the Palestine region after WWI, the U.N. had given mandate to British authority, Turkey had previously owned the territory before that. Arabs and Jews had many problems with conflict in this area living together, so in 1947 the U.N issued a “United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine or United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181,” which divided the region into 2 seprate areas (Wikipedia, 2.4-History). In creation of Israel to the west of River Jordan, and Palestine to the east, so that isrelite jews and arab palestines could live segretly. Although this plan failed and in 1948 the Arab-israeli War took place. “After the United Nations partitioned the territory of the British Mandate of Palestine two states, Jewish and Arab, the Arabs refused to accept it and the armies of Egypt, Transjordan and Iraq, supported by others, attacked the newly established State of Israel. It was the first in a series of open wars in the Aran-Israeli conflict” (Wikipedia, 2.4-History). As a result of this 13 month war Israeli fought off the preditor neighboring countries and won. The 1949 Armistice Agreement was issued as a set of a agreements that was between Israel and the countries involved in the war. It is a set of agreements that ended the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and established the armistice lines between Israel and the West Bank, also known as the Green Line, until the 1967Six Day War (Wikipedia, 2.4-History). From 1967-1993 many wars broke out in the Middle East all which affected Isreal and Palestine. Some of these wars followed in reprimand to these victories they israelis had over Israel, Palastine and other counties took it upon themselves to not let the israelis have victory. In the 1990’s after the wars ended peace was starting to take stride once again, by nations trying to help settle the conflict. Although peace was in motion it didn’t stop the violence that was happing. The most recent breakout were The First and then The Second Intifada. “The First Intifada refers to a series of violent incidents between Palestinians and Israelis between 1987 and approximately 1993, when the Oslo accords were signed and the Palestinian National Authority was established. It is also referred to as the "war of the stones." The Second Intifada, also known as the al-Aqsa-Intifada, is considered to have been between 2000 and early 2005” (Wikipedia, 2.4-History). As I said before many events have taking place that take many years to either grow or disolve. Many of these event have lead to the actual issues that are involved in this conflict between the two regions, which is a powerful point to understand the actual conflict itself.
The actual issues of any conflict are never point blank easy to identify, many of the more difficult conflicts we study have many underlying points that become passed over. Some of the main issues that make up this conflict would be the ethnicty and land disputes. Many of the issues I have stated before in the previous paragraphs, but to go more indepth about each of these main issues is what it’s all about. Ethnicity or nationalism is something that many contries have prejudice crisises with. That fact being that people fear those unlike themselves and fear can create hostility and create a degree of unfamiliarity, a form of racism. So when you have two different culturly groups with strong culture identities, like the Orthodox Jews and the Zionists-Arabs, resideding in one place the tension can and occur including active violence. The other main reason that conflict arose was because of land mass. After the seperation of Palastine in creating Israel, the palestinians were out raged that there conties was broken up and part of it was taken away from them. Where as the israels beleve this was the Holy Land to begin with and since the Brithish mandate said this can be your land they wan to hold on to it. Power stugle over the Israeli is also a main issue for conflict to happen between countries, when the palastinians push the israels push back and the cycle goes back and forth because of fueding issues. These are the issues simplified in my terms because otherwise there are so many issues that create conflict it would be to hard to discribe them all. Plus many of the issues can be found and are laid out through the entire paper because the issues are the keynotes to the conflict itself. Another way to look at the issues of the conflict is to see whats creating them and that would be the factors contributing to the perpetuation of the crisis.
When you think of conflict you think of issues, and mostly you think of the factors explaining why there are these issues. The Israeli and Palastine conflict has many factors that contribute to there ongoing crisis. Isreal-Palestine ProCon Organization thinks that many of the factors that contribute to the two regions contant conflict is because of govermantal differences and ethnicty disimularties. Some of the factors they listed were; Israeli Statehood, Palestinian Statehood, Palestinian Leaders & Organizations, Israeli Leaders & Governments, Wars & Conflicts, Historic Resolutions & Negotiations, Ethnicity & Religion and Land Disputes. All of these items can lead to augmentative disputes between countries, some of the factors we have explained in other paragraphs about the issues they raise and reasons for hostility, something we haven’t touched on is the governmental allocations for each of the regions. Both have very different and complicated governmental systems and this can be a huge factor in creating conflict when you don’t have a very stable administration to govern. Although many factors have been listed that contribute to the conflict, other factors are also creating ways to help with potential to mitigate or end conflict. These can be ways of communication strategies to help bring peace.
In just the last decade or so many efforts have been administrated to help bring an end to the conflict in Israel and Palestine. One of the big moves that happened is the “Road Map for Peace,” which is a plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by international entities: the United States, the European Union, Russia, and the United Nations (Wikipedia, 2.4-History). The concept of this plan is “In exchange for statehood, the road map requires the Palestinian Authority to make democratic reforms and abandon the use of terrorism. Israel, for its part, must support and accept the emergence of a reformed Palestinian government and end settlement activity of the Gaza Strip and West Bank as the Palestinian terrorist threat is removed” (Wikipedia, 2.4-History). Wakipedia state that “On both sides, there have at various times been parties who differ in the degree to which they advocate or use the violent tactics, active non-violence, etc. There are people who sympathize with the goals of one or the other side, without necessarily embracing the tactics that have been used on behalf of those goals; further, there are those who embrace at least some of the goals of both sides.” This is an effort to use intercultural commincation, by embracing the ideas important to other culture you can achive mutual respect and other forms of the BASIC dementions for intercultual competence.
When I first started this paper I din’t know much about the conflict going on in Israel and Palestine. Although I didn’t know much when I started I have come to understand a lot more after doing this research paper and finding out the topics breifed in the introduction. The geographic location of crisis starts, how land disputes over in the Middle East caused tension between both counties over fought over land. The cultural groups involved in the crisis, different ethnicities and religions of the Orthodox Jews and Zionists clash together because of ethnocentrism. The timeline of pre-crisis and crisis to show you how this conflict has evolved over the many years, many of the events I listed have been very important to the progress of the conflict and development of the region. The issues of crisis and how the contribute to the constant conflict, big issues like land conflicts and discrimination to culture groups unlike your own are breeding grounds for continued conflict. The factors that contribute to the perpetuation of the crisis, including ethnicity, land, and government and power that stir issues and keep negative ones in motion. Finally the communication strategies that have provided potential to ease to a possible end, ideas about intercultural competence and peaceful agreements can end conflict if both parties are willing to strive for peace. Although there doesn’t seem to be steady peace in the present time, times are constantly changing in our world and serenity is reachable anywhere though intercultural communication between feuding states.

Wal-Mart

The ethical question of should Wal-Mart be responsible to protect other companies? It can have many different perspectives and the dilemma I face is how to pick just one perspective. As a consumer or a student who is studying the effects of Wal-Mart from an ethical organizational view point. To better evaluate my judgments with facts and information we need to break down the positive and negative sides Wal-Mart can have on the community and also other local businesses.
Although we all know where you stand on the subject of Wal-Mart there must be something appealing or good about it or it wouldn’t be the impressive tycoon it is. Wal-Marts first contribution would be its “Everyday Low Prices, Always.” As a consumer of Wal-Mart (yes I do shop there) I notice the prices are defiantly different then if you go to other local places and as a college student who doesn’t have any money it can help out. This brings up another point, since Wal-Mart has “everything under the sun” going to one store is easier then driving, parking and paying at four different places compared to one and again I’m a college student who doesn’t have time to do the earn running. So for me personally I have always been a fan of Wal-Mart and can see why they have such an affect on a community. The fact also remains that people do like to shop at Wal-Mart; otherwise it would be the mega business that it is today. They can do this be out pricing competitors and the local stores. What in reality all stores try to compete with one another. Even before Wal-Marts came to town businesses would strive for that edge that brought customers to there store over the others. So isn’t Wal-Mart just being competitive as would all stores?
Now there also are the downfalls of Wal-Mart. Over the past few classes we have been analyzing Wal-Mart intensively. Criticizing and condemning it for its ethical practices. How they are misusing the customer’s trust that they are getting the lowest price or how they are importing products for other countries to get lower prices for there products and in turn putting plants and factories out of business by not being able to compete. There has been an ample amount of information that I didn’t know about Wal-Mart before reaching this class. It makes me confused about my role in these hurting factors because I am a consumer. As for the local business am I hurting them as well, as the book describes how mom and pop stores can compete with Wal-Marts driving force by not even being able to purchase the products at the prices Wal-Mart is selling them at. The fact that these arte the kind of stores that pay they employees higher salaries and include benefits. They have personal touch and actual knowledge about products and can answer questions if the customers need help. The example from the book is how a small local craft store has people come in to ask questions about a project and then will buy the supplies at Wal-Mart because of its low price. So Wal-Mart defiantly doesn’t have the personal touch or knowledge about there thousands of products, and I can vouch for that most of the time if you’re looking for something and can’t find it asking an employee won’t get you any farther. They don’t even know what isle the product is in or even if they have the product. So when you compare Wal-Mart with local stores you have to weigh what you value more customer service or low prices and in today’s world most people will pick the one that gets the most for there buck.
So after evaluating Wal-Mart good and bad qualities we can ask if they should protect other business. It’s really a question of ethics because in the real world the answer would be no. Wal-Mart is a business like all others and they aren’t expected to protect other stores. To me the question is does Wal-Marts ethics come to play because we all know that they aren’t doing all this great business just to benefit the consumer. So how much is Wal-Mart manipulating the situation to gain customer compliance? I feel that by imposing it is Wal-Marts job to protect the community’s local businesses we negate the responsibilities from ourselves.
My experience with Wal-Mart I’m sure goes way back. I grew up in St. Cloud and Wal-Mart was very close to my neighborhood. I have always shopped at Wal-Mart either with my parents when I was younger or as I grew older it was a great place to get general stuff and at lower prices. As a college student and being on my own I have noticed more and more of the negative qualities Wal-Mart gives off. As it is becoming even larger all the time and putting more and more products on its shelves I have had more trouble ever finding what I’m looking for. It’s become a hassle to run in for just one or two items because there have become harder to find and will always be a distance to get to from the door. These types of things are making my happier Wal-Mart experiences less and less.
One experience I had recently would be trying to get help in the photo lab. I was there because I had seen commercials on T.V. were you can get a photo put on a gift card during the holiday season and of course the commercial had happy employees helping the man do it and making it seem like a nice and simple touch to personalizing a Wal-Mart gif card. Of course when I got there the experience wasn’t quite the same I saw on T.V. Here are some many factors that drove me insane. One being that they isn’t any room back there for any type of relaxed atmosphere everyone is crowed into as small space with there kids and carts I felt like I was in a free clinic during the flu months. On top of that there is one or two people behind the desk to help but reality there job is to just point you in the right “direction” of where to go or what to do. Waiting in the crowded line wasn’t even the worst part, once I got helped the man just pointed my in the direction of the “do it yourself” machines and went to do his business. Well then I had to stand in that line while women took over fifteen minutes picking and slighting adjusting her holiday picture to the point I was fed up and left.
Although that experience wasn’t the best experience to highlight Wal-Marts “good customer service” I do admit I continue to shop there. I seen it has if you know what you want and can do it by yourself then who cares how great the customer service is. Most people have become so self-sufficient these days that customer service isn’t a priority anymore. It shames me to say that in my situation I would rather take the lower price then have someone hold my hand.

Ethics

This case brings up many good points about ethical issues conflicting with organizations mean to benefit for the greater good. The question in hand asks if to what extent can an organization compromise their ethics to justify and accomplish their goals that will benefit lots of people. This is one of those questions that have a right-right situation on hand. We have talked this semester about how the hardest decisions are the ones you have to make when a both opposing options are on the level and hold their own merit. It’s when your compass is spinning round in circles is when you know that both options have both negative and positive points.
In this case the dilemma of staying on the higher ground and showing good standards of decency toward the opponents viewpoints and comments against name calling and call em’ like we see em’ attitude can be challenging. The reason why both of these situations can make your compass spin is because they both have potential to be right-right situation. Even though from an outside view it may look like the higher ground would be the obvious choice from an ethical standpoint. The hard-hitting practice of “playing hardball” can cloud ethical values. This is because when the other team is playing nasty its hard not to what to play equally as rough.
While reading this case I noticed how the ACTION lobbyers played by the rules and ethical standards while providing information and targeting issues of the excise tax on tobacco strongly. They did this by making solid comments on the issue and the facts and statistics of how people who use tobacco products are eating up part of the deficit for treating smoking related illnesses. Also how taxing cigarettes can help keep teenagers from starting to smoke because they are too expensive. There case was tough through these issues while staying on high ground and making it a public issue to be aware of. But when advocate smokers started to making their voices heard they made remarks that personally attacked those apart of ACTION saying that they should tax their makeup and hair dye. Beyond making wild comments that may have no merit in the topic at hand, but instead saying things to be disruptive and vicious. While keeping the high ground they became less and less powerful in making their point heard and remembered.
If ACTION were to drop their ethical standard and throw some punches below the belt two things would happen. The first is that they may be able to advocate their case with more of an impact. In turn this will benefit winning their case for the need to tax cigarettes since people will notice their position more. The public tends to pay attention to those that aren’t afraid to lay all their cards out on the table and promote how vital their cause is to the public. Plus when you believe in something so much it’s hard not to give it all you got even if it is unethical. By believing that the decision at hand is the best benefit to the public good. Second thing to consider is that you can lose public trust in your organization if the feel that you’re being malicious and your values in lobbying aren’t up to high standards.

Storm King Mountain

This case study defiantly shows another side of the problems organizations are faced with. While reading other cases over the semester we have looked at many different types of tribulations companies and organizations have had to deal with, but I believe that this one has some varying consequences for the events that took place.
After reading what had happened to the firefighters at Storm King Mountain I was troubled by the events that happened after their deaths. The fact is that these men were firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect the conservation of forests and also the protection of those who could have been in danger. While during the mourning of their deaths their families had to endure speculation that it was their fault they were killed is in my mind very wrong.
The first two questions that the book asks us to consider. One being why do I think the public demands an investigation and to assert blame quickly and is it an American culture ordeal. The second question asks do I think that organizations should perform their own investigations. Both of these questions to me have direct relation to this case and further more are important questions to address to better captivate the ethical judgments made by the people involved whether reporters, the firefighters and their families, and the organizations involved.
For the first question I think that the most important reason why the public wants a statement a quickly is possible is closure and understanding. When events or actions take along time to resolve people start to mistrust the situation and develop hostility towards those not giving information. What I mean by this is that people want to know what to know everything so that they can make conclusions and resolve unsettling happenings much like ones that involve the death and tragedy of the firefighters. The same type of situation occurred during 9/11 when people didn’t know what was going on they want information as quickly as possible to draw conclusions from.
Another thing to mention is that when people make statements, like the analysts, it is to address the situation of exigency. This is a term I learned in my Communication 301 class on rhetorical communication. As I was reading about the timeliness of address the firefighter’s misfortune and how to them it wan more important to make a quick statement then to actually uncover the entire truth about the event made me think about exigency of communication. Just like when President Bush addressed the nation the night of 9/11 he didn’t know all the information, but need to calm and address the American public about the attack earlier that morning.
The second question to address is that organizations I believe shouldn’t make their own investigations about internal problems. The case study makes it very clear that when an organization makes an analysis of their own situations that objectivity, accountability other judgments come into affect making clear assessments and reports.
Much like the indignity of Enron while they tried to cover up mishaps and disasters they don’t want to report the truth and will have a bias of reporting information that won’t hurt the organization. This is what I would think most internal investigations would have trouble with. This is because you can’t be objective while trying to protect your own organization. The ordeal with Storm King Mountain is that they wanted to investigate the death or the firefighters so they can assess changes and make conclusions on what went wrong. This is a good for the organization because it leaves them in control. As for actually making a complete and factual investigation for the families and further development of safety procedures for future firefighting incidents there might be some holes. I think that it would be near impossible to make a full objective report while you are one of the stakeholders in the organization. Your bias to the success and future standing of the company and also you don’t want to take the fall. This leads into the next point of accountability. We have talked immensely of how accountability can affect an organization. This case certainly had some lapses while investigating for accountability for the episode on Storm King Mountain. The internal investigation provided information to the reporters that placed the blame of the death of 14 firefighters on the firefighters themselves. My conclusion of this is that it’s it easy to blame the dead because they’re dead. Isn’t that better then assessing blame on those still around to refute accusations? While assessing accountability from internal investigations, while being bias, the truth can escape you. Much like we talked about the Enron case it asks the question where does accountability rest when many are to blame including yourself and plus the fact that they are you friends and coworkers. For the people in this organization sitting in the offices with air conditioning, as the case study describes, weren’t about to take responsibility for the event. As stakeholders and protecting the organization internal investigations can be useful when the truth isn’t what they want to hear.
The reason why I placed these two questions together is because I feel that they tie into one another. These two questions address the timeliness of the investigation being made and the fact that it was an internal investigation made. This made for some very serious lapses of moral judgments from the organization. The part in the book about moral judgments got the most attention from me because I do think that above all that happened to the firefighters at Storm King Mountain was the real tragedy and their deaths shouldn’t have been made an escape route for the organization. To report that their “can-do attitudes” got them killed is a disgrace to there memory and further causes pain to those that knew and lost them, such as there families. While making an investigation can help answer questions many new ones can arise at the same time. It is important to address the public and make an exigency statement to ensure that closure of the incident will be made, but not in the way that the internal investigations conducted to protect themselves over the memories of those who were lost.
